Imam Ali (AS) said:
Allah (SWT) granted angels wisdom without inordinate desires, and granted four legged animals desires without wisdom, and granted to the human beings both wisdom and desires. Therefore, whoever’s wisdom dominates his/her desires is superior to angels, and whoever’s desire dominates his/her wisdom, is lower than four legged animals [1].
Imam Ali (AS) described the human being as the creature having both wisdom and desires and said:
- Whenever the wisdom is completed, desire is damaged/weakened (Qorarul Hekam, Hadith 4054)
- The one who dominates desires, his/her wisdom becomes apparent (AS Above, Hadith 7953)
- The companion of desires has illness of soul and his/her wisdom is damaged (As Above, Hadith 6790)
- Obeying desire of soul, damages wisdom (As Above, Hadith 10985)
- Wisdom is the master and the commander of the army of God, and inordinate desire is the commander of Satan’s army, and each of these want to attract soul to themselves; therefore, any of them gaining victory, the soul will be in their service [2].
