It is narrated from Imam Ali (AS) who narrated from the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) who said:

You do not betray the one who betrays you; otherwise you are a traitor as well. And do not cut relationship with family and relatives even if they do so [1]. It is clear from this narration that, the one who betrays others, is a traitor and if a person reciprocate, that person will also be a traitor; that is why in these cases, one must not reciprocate.
