Imam Baqir (AS) told Jaber (RA):

Know that you will not be considered as our friend and helper unless all your fellow townsman and women gather and say: You are a bad man and this saying does not make you sad and bothered; and if they say: You are a good man; this saying does not make you happy. Therefore, in these occasions, present your soul to the book of Allah (SWT), the holy Quran and see if you are on the path of the Quran, and steadfast and pious in cases which you have been asked to avoid; and be eager towards cases which you have been asked to do; and be fearful of cases which you have been warned of. In this case be steadfast and glad tidings on you, which undoubtedly those words which they have said about you, cannot harm you. And if you are away and separated from the Quran, then why are you so proud of yourself [1]?
