With the beginning of the Islamic month of Muharram al-Haram, Shia Muslims in several UK cities participate in events held in commemoration of the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (A.S.).
Shia scholar and religious leader Dr. Seyed Mustafa Qazwini is addressing the crowds at Pakistani Community Center, Stockport Road, London. He has told the audience and the dedicated organizers that no leader in the history of humankind –apart from Hussein ibn Ali (A.S.) – was physically destroyed and obliterated by his enemies in the battlefield and yet after 14 centuries he is alive and can breathe life, hope and dignity into people of the world. Seyed Qazwini’s speeches would continue for 11 nights until September 10.
Another event is underway at the Baab Ul Ilm Mosque and Islamic Center in Leeds, where Shia activist and cleric Sheikh Jaffer Ladak addresses mourners. Sheikh Jaffar who has finished his religious studies at the Seminary of Karbala has allocated his speeches to the subject of Islam in Britain and Britain in Islam.
Religion in the public space, Britain and Judeo-Christian values, strengthening unity and making Islam a resort for women’s empowerment are among other topics he will touch on during the 11-night event that began August 31.
Sheikh Jaffar described the 10 days of Muharram al-Haram as the most powerful annual conference in the world. He criticized those preachers who make people cry over oppression and cruelties that happened against Imam Hussein and his Ahlul Bayt while they never mention the oppression in Kashmir, Palestine, Pakistan, Nigeria and Myanmar.
