The Islamic call to prayers (Adhan) will ring out from a pair of mosques in Ajax, Durham Region in Southern Ontario, Canada, during Ramadan.
Masjid Quba and Jamia Masjid Sayyidah Zainab will be broadcasting a call to prayer for Maghrib (sunset prayer).
Adhan is somehow similar to church bells ringing on Christian holidays such as Easter or Christmas.
The Town granted the mosques the right to broadcast the call to prayer.
“The Town prides itself on being an inclusive place, and encourages new and creative ideas that foster a welcoming community. Unprecedented times call for unprecedented understanding, we are proud to join other municipalities to grant this exception,” Ajax Mayor Shaun Collier said in a statement.
Ramadan began on April 24 and runs to Sunday, May 24. The day after the last day of Ramadan is called Eid-al-Fitr.
Broadcasting the call lets the 1,500 to 1,800 members of the congregations feel a sense of community and connection throughout this holy month while physically distancing.
The broadcast call is limited to two minutes in length daily.
