Hussain & Jesus

Hussain ibn Ali who Muslims revere as the third Imam in the line of divinely appointed Imams or leaders is not only an exemplary guide for the Muslims; but, he is also like Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) a teacher for all of humanity.

Hussain & Jesus

Beyond that, Hussain is the recipient of all the great Prophets in relation to their message and actions. Therefore, Hussain is not a separate individual with a separate mission but rather, an extension of other prominent individuals who led the people during their time towards the Oneness of God, justice, freedom and integrity. Hence, Muslims regularly recite in a special visitation to Hussain about this connection to the past Prophets by acknowledging that he is their inheritor. Consequently, we send salutations, saying:

Peace be upon you, O the inheritor of Adam, the one chosen by God,

Peace be upon you, O the inheritor of Noah, the Prophet of God,

Peace be upon you, O the inheritor of Abraham, the friend of God,

Peace be upon you, O the inheritor of Moses, the one who talked to God,

Peace be upon you, O the inheritor of Jesus, the spirit of God,

As the holidays approach near, we again find the connection between Jesus (peace and blessings be upon him) and Hussain. Undoubtedly, he was truly the inheritor of Jesus, the Spirit of God as he exhibits similar qualities to him as well.

Just as Jesus was searched out by the King of the time, Herod, because he objected against the King’s indecent actions and called the people towards reform, Husain was also sought after by the ruling Caliph at the time, Yazid who was also corrupt. The Caliph wanted Husain to pay him allegiance to him thus, legitimizing his rule. However, Husain refused and stood by his principles of Faith, for which he was martyred.

Both great personalities endured unbearable difficulties and sufferings. Nonetheless, Jesus and Imam Husain still exhibited love, mercy, and compassion that they prayed for the people who were against them. Jesus prayed, “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they are doing.” Husain taught this valuable lesson of forgiveness. He vehemently exclaimed, “The most merciful person is the one who forgives when he is able to take revenge.”

In this season of fostering peace, charity, and togetherness, the message of Jesus Christ and Hussain ring foremost in extending these values and much more that brings to the heart of any believer serenity and strength.
