When Sofyan Thoory was walking in Masjid-ul-Haram, he saw Imam Sadeq (AS) who was wearing nice clothes. He said:
Swear to God, I will go and blame him. He went close and said: O’ the son of the Prophet (PBUH), swear to God, the Prophet (PBUH) and Ali ibn Abitalib (AS) and none of your fathers did not wear these types of clothes! Imam Sadeq (AS) replied: The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) lived in hard times and he behaved according to his situation, and after him the situation has changed for better, and the righteous ones are more deserving to use these blessings.
And then, Imam Sadeq (AS) recited Ayah 32 of Surah Al-A’araaf: “Say (O’ Prophet), who has forbidden the adornment and the nourishment God has provided for God’s servants? Say, they are (allowed) for those who believe during the life of this world; they will be theirs alone on the Day of Resurrection. This is how God make Divine Revelation clear for those who understand.”
O’ Thoory, these clothes you see I am wearing are for the sake of mixing with people. Then Imam Sadeq (AS) grabbed Thoory’s hand and pulled him towards himself and pulled back the beautiful clothing and pointed to thick clothing under them and said: These are for me, and what you see I wore for people. Then, Imam (AS) pulled back Thoory’s thick top clothing and showed the soft clothing he was wearing under them and said: You wear these for yourself and thick clothing for showing to people [1].
