About a hundred manuscripts and lithographs with the theme of Imam Hussein (AS) are available in Persian, Arabic, Urdu and Turkish among the existing collection of books in the central library of Astan Quds Razavi.
The books generally include the story of Imam Hussein’s martyrdom, biography, narrations, descriptions of works and so on.
Amidst the most important works on this subject is the Qur’an attributed to Imam Hussein handwriting, which has been written on gazelle skin in Kufic style and is currently on display at the shrine’s museum.
“Ahval e Imams Hussein (AS) and…,” “Imam Hussein and Nabovvacollection” compiled by Moddares Chardahi, “The War and Ashura’s Events in poetry and prose,” “War of Poems,” “The Personality and Position of Imam Hassan and Imam Hussein (AS),” “A Treatise on the virtue of Salavat and the Pilgrimageof Imam Hussein (AS),” “The Descriptions of Imam Hussein (AS) Manners” and “The Description of Imam Hussein’s (AS) Divan” are some of the works in Persian and Arabic written in 12th, 13th and 14th centuries.
“Conditions of the Birth of Imam Hussein (AS),” “Elegy in the Bereavement of Imam Hussein (AS)” and “Martyrdom Story of Imam Hussein (AS)” are three valuable works in Urdu and “Turkish Masnavi in the Story of Imam Hussein (AS)” written in the 13th century in Turkish, are among other works in the AQR library.
In between the works that are partly devoted to Imam Hussein, “Tahfat al-Abrarfi Manaqeba Aemata al-Athar,” written in 11thcentury, “Al-Tatemma fi Tavarikhal-Aemma,”“al-Wafi” from 12th century AH, and “Omdeh al-Manaqeb fi Oyun Sehahal-Akhbar” written in tenth century are among other notable works.
A valuable version titled “Al-Dama’at al-Sakeba al-Mosibat al-Raeba” on the birth of Imam Hussein (AS), his Imamate, miracles, the reward of shedding tears for the tragedy of Imam Hussein (AS), Imam Hussein’s departure from Mecca and his martyrdom in 1279 AH is written in Najaf.
Another exquisite version of the story of Imam Hussein’s (AS) martyrdom in Persian, Arabic and Urdu holds a small appendant front is adorned with delicate flowers and leaves in the azure background and its papers are tabulated in azure, cinnabarite, Zar and Tahrir.
