Why did the moon divide in two by the Prophet of Islam (PBUH)?

The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) was sitting in Hijral Ismaeil and Quraysh were talking to each other and were saying: Mohammad (PBUH) has disabled us; we do not know what to do. Some of them said: Let us go and ask him to show us a sign in the sky because magic and sorcery is not effective in the sky. The Prophet (PBUH) asked them: Do you know and see this full moon? They replied: Yes. The Prophet (PBUH) asked again: Do you want your sign be this Badr moon? They replied: Yes. The Prophet (PBUH) pointed to the moon with his blessed finger and the moon was divided and separated in two.

Then, they said: Return the two halves of the moon to their places. The Prophet (PBUH) again pointed to one half of the moon with one blessed hand and pointed to the other half with his other blessed hand, and they came close and stuck to each other and the moon became complete and stayed in its place. Disbelievers said: Stand up, Mohammad’s (PBUH) magic was effective in the sky. As a result of the inappropriate reaction of disbelievers about halving the moon by the Prophet (PBUH), Allah (SWT) sent Ayahs 1 and 2 of Surah Al-Qamar: “The hour draws near; the moon is spilt in two. Whenever the disbelievers see a sign, they turn away and say, same old sorcery [1]!”
