Here's What The Month of Muharram Means To A Sunni

Growing up Sunni, we often come across extremists from our sect who consider Shias as ‘Non-Muslims’. Regardless of what one’s point of view may be, our society limits the month of Muharram as a time during which only Shias mourn. But weren’t Hasan and Hussain one of “us” as well?

WE WEEP FOR HUSSAIN – WE CRY FOR HUSSAIN AND OUR HEARTS STILL GRIEVE AFTER 1400 YEARS OVER WHAT THE BRUTAL THE ARMY OF YAZID IBN MUAWIYAH DID TO THE SON OF FATIMA AZ-ZAHRA AND ALI IBN ABU TALIB. JUST LIKE SHIAS, SUNNIS MOURN AS WELL.

We love our Prophet (PBUH) and we love what he loves – for what our Prophet (PBUH) adored is adored by the Supreme God. We bless darood on our Prophet, his family and his beloved during all the Salaat we offer.

After a millennium, there are still four members of Prophet’s family who are kept alive in sheer eternal love and passion – Hazrat Fatima (RA), Hazrat Ali (RA) and their two sons, Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain.

Imam Hassan and Imam Hussain – two favorite children of our Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) – the leaders who will be leading the youth of the Paradise – out of which Imam Hussain – who was murdered by the followers of their grandfather and Allah.

What The Month of Muharram Means To A Sunni

Why is it that growing up, our Islamic curriculums never teach us how two children, Hasan and Hussain become Imam Hasan and Imam Hussain? Why is that we are never taught of the childhood of these two leaders?

We know our Prophet loved the innocent children so much that, “He would kiss and love them and they would run and bring Prophet’s blessed slippers.” But why aren’t the favorite children of our Prophet taken as role models for our children? Why is that we are never taught about what happened in Karbala 1400 years ago?

IF YOU WANT LEARN ABOUT MUHARRAM, ATTEND A MAJLIS AND YOU WILL BE SURPRISED TO FIND OUT WHAT REALLY HAPPENED IN KARBALA

The misconception in society continues to prevail – where people label Muharram as a month of Shiites only.

Our families never tell us how the grandsons of our Prophet were murdered by the people of his own Ummah. We are never taught about the betrayal that came from Yazid, son of Muawiyah and Bani Ummayah.

We are never taught about how Hussain was disregarded from the righteousness of Caliphate and neither does anyone tell us, Sunnis, on how Muawiyah warned his son, “Do not meet God with his (Imam Hussain) blood.”

THEY DID NOT SPARE A SINGLE DROP OF WATER FOR THE GRANDSON OF PROPHET, SOMEONE THEY CLAIMED TO FOLLOW AND LOVE

What The Month of Muharram Means To A Sunni

Imam Hussain did not step in the battlefield to fight as a Shia or to fight as a Sunni – he came to fight against the darkness and injustice – to fight the same way our Prophet did. But we are never taught about this.

DAASTAN-E-KARBALA WAS A BATTLE BETWEEN HAQ VS. KUFR – NOT SHIA VS. SUNNI

What we are taught is how it is not wise to hold an engagement during the first 10 days of Muharram. We are never taught about the suffering Imam Hussain, his army and his family went through. We are never told how the opposition army, men of Yazid beheaded the King of Martyrs and mocked his death.

There are not enough words to describe the revolting elapse of taqwa – conscience of the basic humanity who killed the household of our Prophet. There are not enough words to describe how Imam Hussain still lives in hearts of billions, even after 1400 years. There are not enough words to describe the unjust and torture Imam Hussain faced, just to bring justice to what his Grandfather (PBUH) had been fighting for.

What The Month of Muharram Means To A Sunni

I long for arrows, spear and swords. I long for company of Imam Hussain [who battled evil and lost life, yet never surrendered].

See how I gather straw to make my nest. And then also see how I burn it [My passion is restless and forces me to keep moving and not settle down]

I am advised “Keep lips closed so that the secret is not revealed”

“I agree, but my lips long for Takbir, Allah O’Akbar [that reveal the glories of God]”

I am told “Whatever you are seeking, just ask”

I reply “I was to see and be face-to-face with my destiny”

Of my life, I only recall that it was a Dream

But the the meaning of that dream is what I seek.

Where is that glance of beloved that stole my heart?

I still long for the arrow of your eyes again.

 Allama Iqbal’s Payam-e-Mashriq

If you have come this far, make a prayer for our Prophet Muhammad, Imam Hussain, his family and his Ummah.
