15th Shawwal; Martyrdom anniversary of Hamza Ibn Abd al-Mutalib, uncle of the Holy Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household)

On such day, we commemorate the martyrdom anniversary of Al-Hamza Ibn Abd Al-Muttalib (peace be upon both of them), the uncle of the Prophet Mohammad (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household), in the battle of Uhud that was on the fifteenth of Shawwal of the third year of Hijra, and in which the following verse was revealed:

15th Shawwal; Martyrdom anniversary of Hamza Ibn Abd al-Mutalib, uncle of the Holy Prophet (Allah’s prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household)

{Andwhat struck you on the day the two armies met was by permission of Allah that He might make evident the [true] believers.{ (3:166)

It was narrated that the first brigade held by the Great Prophet (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) in Medina was the one led by Hamza, as he sent him with thirty horsemen to intercept the convoy of Quraysh composed of three hundred horsemen led by coming from Levant, and there was no fighting between the two sides, and Hamza's brigade came back to Medina.

In the first year of Hijra, Hamza has held the banner of the Messenger of Allah (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) in the battles of Bawat, Abwa' and Bani Qaynuqa', and he supported bravely the Holy Prophet (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) in the great battle of Badr, in which he has killed seven of the strongest men of Quraysh.

Hamza (peace be upon him) has participated in the battle of Uhud, and because he has killed the strongest men of Quraysh in the battle of Badr, which has angered the Infidels of Mecca, and thus began to seize the opportunity to take their revenge from him, and Hind bint 'Utbah has brought Wahshi Ibn Harb, from Abyssinia, and gave him money to kill Hamza, to avenge her father and brother who were killed at Badr.

Wahshi was famous by his spear throw, and at the time the Arabs did not know this special weapon, which was known by the people of Abyssinia. This short spear was called by Mirzaq (javelin) by Arabs.

Wahshi has narrated that when he was on the land of Uhud: I was looking at Hamza with his sword, killing all those in front of him, I took my spear and thrown it towards him, it fell in the bottom of his stomach, which killed him, I run to Hind to inform her about the killing of Hamza, she came then to the corpse, she opened his stomach, took his liver and put it in her mouth, she tried to eat it, but couldn't so she threw it out.

When the Uhud battle ended, Hamza (peace be upon him) was found out in the mountain valley, in a sorrowful condition. When the Holy Prophet (Allah's prayers be upon him and upon his holy Household) has seen the scene, he cried, took off his gown and covered the martyr and said to him: "Uncle, The Lion of Allah, the Lion of His Apostle, doer of good deeds, remover of worries, defender of Allah's Apostle, and saver of his face."
